Section 504

The Canton Public School District is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students, including those with disabilities. In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we ensure that students with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) and are afforded the same opportunities to succeed as their peers.

What Is Section 504?

Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. In schools, it ensures that eligible students with disabilities receive necessary accommodations and services to participate fully in the general education curriculum and extracurricular activities.

Who Qualifies Under Section 504?

A student qualifies for protection under Section 504 if they have:

  • A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as learning, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, or concentrating.
  • A record of such an impairment.
  • Been regarded as having such an impairment.

What Does a 504 Plan Include?

A 504 Plan outlines the accommodations, modifications, and services needed to support a student’s access to the educational environment.

How to Request a 504 Plan

If you believe your child may qualify for services under Section 504, please contact your child’s school counselor or the district's 504 Coordinator. The school will conduct an evaluation to determine eligibility and work with you to develop a plan tailored to your child’s needs.
